Puppy Personality

Alright, it’s almost been a week and Josh and I officially find this next story funny so I am going to share it with you. (If you are family reading this and haven’t been told this story by Josh or I yet, I’d stop reading and wait to hear it from one of us…)

Last Thursday Josh and I made the executive decision to roll out our area rug in the family room. We put it away after Harvey decided to make it his personal bathroom a few times since it was brand new we didn’t want it to get ruined. But he was over a week accident free so we decided it was time.

I was so excited! Our floors are cold and the furniture in our family room has been sliding ever since the rug got rolled up. So when Josh got home from work we pulled it out of storage and moved all of our furniture.

Because our TV and stand are so heavy, we left them where they were and partially unrolled the rug. The plan was to have Josh tip the TV stand and I would slide the rug under. As we are doing this Harvey runs in between us and pees. On the rug. Less than a foot away from each of us.

As he is using the bathroom on our rug, the rain knocked out our power. Awesome.

Josh scolded Harvey and tied him up on our covered porch so we could clean the mess. It’s not easy to clean pee off a dark carpet with no lights. We were frustrated, but decided Harvey just wouldn’t be allowed on the rug, we didn’t do all of this work for nothing.

Then we looked outside. Harvey was rolling around in the mud puddles. He was filthy. He looked back at us with his mud mustache in defiance. Our little Harvey was being a jerk.

So now the next problem on our agenda was to trek our dirty puppy through our perfectly cleaned house. (I had spent the entire day cleaning every nook and cranny). I watched totally bummed out as Josh carried him to the tub and mud dripped everywhere.

I held the flashlight over the tub as Josh bathed him, then we both tackled the messy floor. We made Harvey sit in his bed and we finished setting up the rug and furniture.

Throwback to his 1st bath in honor of his mud bath
Thankfully it was shortly after that the power came on and I was able to make dinner. So I was in the kitchen cooking and Josh was working on our budget. I looked out to the family room just in time to see Harvey pee on the rug, AGAIN. I called out to Josh and he jumped up to grab him. As Josh scolded him again, I grabbed the cleaning supplies. This time we wised up and put Harvey in his crate while we cleaned and decided he could sit there all night if he was going to be such a brat.

And he must have known we weren’t messing around because he didn’t make a peep. We sat and ate dinner and cleaned up, no noise came from the crate. After 2.5 hours, we let him out. He was remorseful and didn’t go near the rug.

It’s been 6 days and Harvey hasn’t made the rug his bathroom since. That night was ridiculous, but now looking back, it’s kind of funny to think about how Harvey’s personality played out. He definitely knew what he was doing, and acted out because we weren’t giving him attention while we did the rug. Thankfully, he has been awesome ever since.
